Online Real Estate Courses & Programs

Online Real Estate Career Training

Online real estate courses are well-suited for individuals who possess a natural ability to sell, enjoy helping others, and are pleasant, personable, honest, and enthusiastic.

Realtors typically work with both sellers and buyers. They help homeowners list and sell their home or properties, while also helping homebuyers to find the property of their dreams.

Realtors must be familiar with the market and recognizable within their communities. Realtors must also be familiar with local zoning and tax laws and financing options for their clients.

Online Real Estate Courses

Online real estate courses provide students with knowledge and information regarding specific laws and regulations, principles and practice necessary to working in real estate, and how to best work with clients and and other real estate professionals. Most online real estate courses provide an extensive curriculum covering all aspects of real estate, including:

  • property law
  • real estate brokerage
  • contracts
  • local zoning and tax law
  • transfer of title and title records
  • real estate financing
  • property management & real estate appraisal
  • fair housing and ethics practices
  • environmental issues

It is now possible to take real estate courses online, in form of certificate programs, associate degree programs, and bachelor's degree programs. Some colleges even offer graduate degrees in real estate.

Real Estate Licensure

In addition to real estate career training, many online real estate courses will help students obtain their real estate license in the state where they plan to work. Licensure typically requires 60-90 hours of instruction. The benefit of an online program is that it allows the learner to achieve his or her license at a pace that fits into his or her current schedule. Typical real estate licensure programs include:

  • Real Estate Salesperson's License
  • Real Estate Broker's License
  • Real Estate Salesperson/Broker License Exam Prep
  • Real Estate Salesperson/Broker License Renewal
  • Home Inspection
  • Professional Property Management

Career Options in Real Estate

Obtaining an online degree in real estate allows you to pursue a variety of careers. As a real estate agent, you are licensed by the state to handle real estate sales. You can also pursue as career as a real estate broker, owning your own company or manage several agents. Another career option is that of a real estate appraiser. An appraiser determines the fair market value of a home for sale.

Salary and Prospects in Real Estate

According to the 2008 Occupational Outlook Handbook, in 2006, real estate brokers and sales agents held about 564,000 jobs. At that time, real estate sales agents held approximately 77% of those jobs.

In addition, about 61% of real estate brokers and sales agents were self-employed. The employment of real estate brokers and sales agents often is sensitive to swings in the economy, though, especially ups and downs in interest rates. During periods of declining economic activity and rising interest rates, the volume of sales-and the resulting demand for sales workers—usually falls.

The median annual earnings, including commissions, of salaried real estate sales agents were $39,760 in May, 2006.
