What is Distance Learning Online?

Distance learning online refers to courses that are taught online, or by e-learning over the Internet.

The Internet is a vast network of computer networks joined together through high speed communication lines, typically called broadband cabling. The Internet has revolutionized learning globally, creating the opportunity to deliver distance learning and online college courses anywhere in the world, anytime.

Tools that online distance learning programs use include electronic mail (e-mail), chat, private online discussion forums (usually delivered through a Learning Management System (LMS) and the World Wide Web. Each of these technologies are briefly described here:

Electronic mail makes it possible to send and receive message from anywhere in the world over the Internet. Another word for electronic mail is e-mail, and is used pervasively by students enrolled in distance learning online programs to communicate with each other and their instructors. Homework and exams are also submitted as attachments to e-mails.

Internet Relay Chat (sometimes called IRC and is the basis of chat rooms) is a network providing channels or areas where students can log in and participate in real-time discussions about topics covered in class. In distance learning online programs, instructors regularly hold sessions where students can ask questions, participate online in discussions, view lecture slides provided by the instructor and also discuss exam results.

The World Wide Web (also known as the Web) is a system for viewing, sharing, publishing and reviewing many types of documents on the Internet. Web documents are created in HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and are interpreted by Web browsers (software that enables you to view HTML e.g Internet Explorer). Instructors use Web sites and Learning Management systems such as blackboard, Desire to Learn (D2L) to deliver lectures, assignments, tests and facilitate discussions.
